Kalim wandered into the sparring section of the academy with eyes wide as he took in all that was around him. This was an entirely new part of the academy to the young apprentice, one which he hadn't thought he would be entering for some time yet. Thinking he must be quite late, he hurried on to meet the person who had called him out here.
"You wanted something?" He asked Justin as he first spotted him upon his entrance. He knew very little about this person at all, having seen him once before and only in passing, where even at that time he seemed pre-occupied with the person who had accompanied Kalim at the time.

"Rank one?" Kalim said with a quizzical look on his face, "Ummmmm, not to show any disrespect or anything, but what are you talking about? Isn't rank one sort of symbolic of a beginning.....as in, an apprenticeship like I already have?"
After a few moments more of such contemplative thoughts, he shook his head abruptly, clearing his mind of any such thoughts, which seemed rather pointless about now. "Well, as for the practicing of my magic, I'd love to improve a bit. Truth be old I'm not very high up on the food chain when looking from a magical skill perspective, anything you might have to offer would be of great assistance."

"Ummmmmm, sure, that works." Replied Kalim, still not knowing what this person was talking about yet realizing that simply agreeing was the apparent way to get through this bit of senseless talk with least trouble.
"Anyways," he said, attempting to steer this little conversation back to an area that was at least somewhat relevant, "What exactly did you call me here for? If it is training, as you say, then we probably should get started and not just chat idly while wasting time that might otherwise be spent doing something important."

Talk was clearly getting him absolutely nowhere. This person seemed fairly intent on training, so that implied fighting against him or something of the sort. After all, that was what sparring was, wasn't it?
Not waiting for Justin to finish continuing this irritating repetition of his pointless prater concerning rank, Kalim closed the distance between them in several short strides. He didn't trust his skill in magic enough so that he would use it solely in a duel, yet he did carry around a sturdy staff with him which he now swung in an overhand arc, aiming a forceful blow at his fellow student’s head.

*********************** Far away from there inside of the abandoned citadel, Nerull was wanderring the halls in search of the Room of Sight. This powerful room had many amplification crystal arranged in complex patterns so as to grant great power to whomever may be drawing upon them. It was these massive arrays that allowed for Nerull to gaze upon the world outside of the citadel despite his imprisonment. Nerull had just happened upon the room, whether by his own desire to go there or by some other act beyond him. Inside the great chamber he drifted, for he did not actually walk as he had no true form within his cloak. Once 'seated' inside the patterns, he cast his mind and thoughts far outside of his own body. His tendrils of thought drifted to and fro in search of one with the possibility of releasing him from his imprisonment. ***********************

Kalim wondered at the fact that he had seemingly just completely ignored a direct blow to the head. Either this person had a very thick and damage-resistant skull or he was tougher than Kalim gave him credit for.
Either way, he was now right in front of the other mage and there was one spell he could perform quite well from this distance. Clenching the fist not already gripping his staff, he focused his mind on a torch lit near the entrance to the sparring room. In only a few moments concentration he had conjured up for himself a small ball of fire, about the size of a candle flame; yet it still would suffice for his purpose.
Lowering his staff slightly, he rammed it forcefully into Justin's gut, hopefully enough to wind him while in the same motion he took a step partially foreword; enough so that Justin was easily within arms reach, at which time he placed his palm upon his opponents shoulder, where the fire that had been burning so cheerfully in his own palm swiftly caught on Justin's shoulder, igniting that portion of his clothing.
Within the span of a couple seconds, not only had he bashed his supposed 'teacher' multiple times with his staff but he had left a parting gift by turning his shoulder into a makeshift torch. As quickly as Kalim had stepped charged foreword to attack, he broke away and took several steps back, waiting to see if Justin was finally ready to stop talking and do what they were supposedly there to do.

As Nerull brushed across the minds of those present, he picked up a bit of the intentions within their souls. He would have to work with this one to be sure, but the result would be quite nice.
"Maybe the other could be used as a vessel for my transcendence," Nerull said quietly to himself.
As he made contact with the mind of the one he saw promise in, a slight tingling would be felt radiating down their spine and extending through all of their nerves.
"Burn him" Nerull whispered within the mage Kalim's head. The voice echoing through his body yet noticeably not an audible voice.
