The red sun was slowly setting over the horizon and sent gentle ripples of golden light through the dark waters of the lake. Once in a while, a bird from above or fish from below would come to disturb the surface of the waters. Then, once in a while, a small white petal would float downward from the solitary figure that sat on the high banks overlooking the lake.
The young woman sat by the water with her mind many leagues away. Once in a while, her eyes would grow unfocused as she gazed over the waters to a land far away. In her mind, she'd see images, those of people long gone, those of memories so distant.
Letting the wind play with her long, dark strands of hair as well as the simple, once silky, material of her dress, the girl busied herself with sprinkling the white petals into the wind. As the wind picked up, the spray from the water sent many of the droplets to fall on her pale face. Nature, it seemed, knew that the only thing that was missing from the girl's drawn and sad face were tears. However they would not come simply, for there were hardly any left.
The main reason that Ailena had come to the lake that evening was for her to be able to contemplate all that had happened to her before arriving in Avaren. The loss and fear that had filled her life since her escape were overpowering her senses. At least no one would reach her in that kingdom. At least there she was out of harms way. As if to prove her point, the girl's blue eyes fell upon the scars on her left arm. Letting out a sigh and trying to forget those memories, Ailena's gaze once again averted itself to the dark waters and the setting sun.
