Ailena was not one for taverns. She found those places vulgar, uncivilized, and down right rotten. While in Avaren, she had made it a point to never step into the most popular one if she could avoid it. Sadly, under the circumstances she found herself, she couldn't avoid it.
Outside the tavern, a sheet of rain poured down the street. The down pour, added with the freezing temperature created a deadly mix for any human being. And, upon returning from the market, Ailena had no place to hide other than the tavern. And, of course, she was not the only one.
With a deep sigh, the young woman left her horse in the worker's hands and proceeded into the only warm place on that street.
Looking around, Ailena figured the first place to stop would be the bar area. Calling up the bartender, she ordered a hot cup of tea and waited patiently for it to be made. Paying the man, she took her drink into the farthermost corner of the room. There, in the darkness, she hoped to sit unnoticed until the rain let down, or hopefully stopped.
Her worse fear was, of course, if it didn't let off for hours. Would she really stay there that long? Letting her blue eyes travel over the other guests, she noticed a pair of drunk slugs bargaining over the ring one was selling to the other. It hadn't occurred to them that the ring being sold was on the customer's finger. Then, a second large party of loud men pulled her attention. Their yells and screams, chortling laughs were quite unnecessary for as close as they were sitting, the woman was sure they could hear each other just fine.
No, she was sure that she would not survive there for long. Pulling her satchel of purchases and money closer to her on her bench, she let her eyes stare out the partly shut window located at the wall at the end of her table. She saw a few stragglers running from the rain. It wasn't letting down.
"What luck," she told herself with a downhearted sigh.
